jill cockram“Food Growing in the Southern Highlands – Past, present and future”
by Jill Cockram
29th August, 2009

It was heartwarming to see the Council theatrette filled to the gunnels with people interested in such an important topic as this for the future food security of residents of the Wingecarribee Shire. This was a two-day event, the main thrust being the Saturday program of speakers experienced in their fields related to food production. On Sunday 30th a community bus took us around the district to look at various food growing initiatives from community gardening and farming to a free-range egg farm.

Sunday turned out to be a beautiful spring day down on the farm and a very productive day as well.
First up, Paul got to work on the "Fergi" collecting tonnes of mulch for the vege patch. The machine we use is basically a giant lawn mower with a catcher on top. Paul went out into one of the paddocks and collected a few cubic meters of lovely mulch in a matter of minutes. The team in the garden got to work sheet mulching a couple of beds that have been fallow over the winter and then mulching with the collected mulch. They also got stuck into some weeding and planting. Our compost master Phil turned and repacked out compost bays and distributed some beautiful finished compost out into the beds. Phil is a great compost master, very knowledgable and experienced in creating some high nutrient compost.
Meanwhile Ant lead a team of strong blokes in collecting timber form a fallen tree. We often need to fell old Black Wattles as they become decrepid and dangerous after only about 10 years or so.
Warwick weeded and mulched the Peruvian Ground Apples (a.k.a. yakon) in the old half water tanks.
At lunch we launched our FRIENDS CARD. The purpose of the card is to reward all the great work and assistance that our volenteers selflessly give each month. To find out more about the friends card you can read about it here.
Overall another wonderful and productive day. Thank you to all our friends once again.
